With the arrival of cold weather, respiratory infections tend to recur regularly. Among the most common autumn illnesses are flu and the common cold, which are often grouped together. In reality, they are caused by different viral agents and also differ in the intensity of their symptoms.

Knowing the characteristics of flu is important in order to deal with it in the best possible way and to take preventive action. In the following sections, we will look at some key information, focusing on how to manage infection risk and established infections.

Symptoms: How to Quickly Tell Flu and Cold Apart

The differences between “true” influenza and the common cold relate primarily to the viral agent involved. In the first case, the disease is caused by influenza viruses, grouped in the Orthomyxoviridae family. In the second case, the virus responsible for the infectious process is the rhinovirus.

Other major factors that help distinguish between the two include how the symptoms begin, their type and their intensity. Generally speaking, flu is characterized by the simultaneous presence of rather high fever (>38°C / 100.4°F), at least one respiratory symptom (e.g., cough) and widespread muscle and joint pain.

The common cold, on the other hand, often does not involve significant fever or pain and may cause at most a mild increase in body temperature (<38°C / 100.4°F). Cold symptoms are mainly concentrated in the nose and upper airways and may include sneezing, nasal congestion and sore throat. These symptoms may also appear with flu syndromes.

Another important aspect concerns the onset of the infectious disease, which is more abrupt (a few hours) in the case of flu and more gradual (2–3 days) for the common cold.

Incubation Period and Duration: What to Expect and When to Worry

Knowing the timing of flu and cold helps you manage these infections from the very beginning and throughout all their phases. This allows for timely medical and pharmaceutical intervention.

As for flu, the incubation period is very short: it generally lasts 1–2 days from the time of infection. Acute symptoms, such as fever and pain, last about 3–4 days, while recovery usually occurs within about a week. However, fatigue and cough may persist for longer.

The incubation period of the common cold, on the other hand, is longer and ranges from 24 to 72 hours after exposure. The duration of cold symptoms can cover about one week, with progressively decreasing intensity.

When should you worry and seek medical care? Both flu and the common cold are generally self-limiting illnesses, although—especially in the case of flu—complications can occur. This happens mainly in vulnerable individuals, such as older adults and people with chronic diseases.

Symptoms that should be reported to a doctor include breathing difficulties, chest pain and general conditions that tend to worsen.

Transmission: Routes of Infection and Peak Contagious Periods

Respiratory viruses are highly contagious and spread easily, especially during the cold season, when people spend more time in closed and crowded environments. Below are the main transmission routes:

  • Airborne transmission: through droplets of saliva emitted into the air by an infected person when they sneeze, cough or speak close to others. Carried by these droplets dispersed in the environment, viruses can be inhaled by healthy individuals and very likely cause infection.
  • Indirect contact: by touching surfaces contaminated with viruses and then bringing unwashed hands to the mouth, nose or eyes. The survival time of viruses on surfaces depends on several factors and can vary.

The contagious period is an important aspect because people can be contagious even before the onset of symptoms. Specifically, in the case of flu, an infected person can be contagious up to two days before symptoms appear and remain so for up to about a week afterwards. Individuals with weakened immune systems may remain contagious for a longer period. This also means that asymptomatic people can contribute to viral spread.

Everyday Protection: Hygiene, Masks, Ventilation and Lifestyle

Preventive strategies are the most effective tool for reducing and containing the risk of infection. Alongside the flu vaccine, which should be taken annually at the beginning of autumn, it is also advisable to adopt a few behavioral measures. Let’s see what they are.

  • Hand hygiene: thorough and frequent handwashing with warm water and soap is the first daily preventive rule. Hands should be washed after visiting crowded places and before touching the face. When water is not readily available, pocket-sized hand sanitizers are a good alternative.
  • Cough and sneeze etiquette: when coughing or sneezing, it is best to cover your nose and mouth with disposable tissues to limit the spread of any pathogens in the surrounding environment. Alternatively, you can cover your mouth and nose with the inner side of your elbow.
  • Use of masks: wearing appropriate face masks (e.g., FFP2/KN95-type masks) helps reduce the risk of infection. This is especially important in public and crowded spaces, particularly (but not only) during the autumn–winter season. To protect others, masks should also be worn when you already have respiratory symptoms.
  • Avoiding crowded places: when possible, during epidemic periods it is advisable to reduce time spent in crowded spaces in order to limit opportunities for viral transmission.

These behaviors are even more effective when combined with a healthy lifestyle, aimed at overall well-being, as outlined below.

  • Diet: a balanced diet rich in fruit, vegetables and nuts provides essential nutrients that support and modulate the immune system.
  • Hydration: keeping your body well hydrated helps, among other things, maintain the proper function of the respiratory mucous membranes, making them more efficient at countering viruses. It is therefore important to drink 8–10 glasses of water a day and to get additional fluids from herbal teas and natural fruit juices.
  • Rest: the immune system also benefits from adequate rest, which means good sleep quality. As a general rule, it is advisable to sleep about 8 hours per night.
  • Physical activity: regular exercise, tailored to individual capabilities, can stimulate the body’s natural defenses. When it is difficult to engage in structured sports, it is still important to maintain simple habits such as walking briskly every day and choosing the stairs instead of the elevator.

Individual measures should be combined with environmental strategies to improve indoor air quality and the overall healthiness of shared spaces.

  • Ventilation: it is good practice to regularly ventilate enclosed spaces to reduce the concentration of viruses in bioaerosols. This can be achieved by opening doors and windows frequently or by using mechanical ventilation systems.
  • Surface cleaning: controlling infection risk also requires proper cleaning and disinfection of surfaces. A correct procedure involves first removing visible dirt and then applying appropriate disinfectant solutions.

  • Get plenty of rest: sleeping, resting and avoiding sudden changes in temperature allow the body to focus on eliminating the virus. Physical exertion further weakens the infected person and slows down recovery.
